Dungeons

Dungeons

Description
Dungeons follows the mis-adventures of the foremost of all Dungeon Lordswho spends his time luring heroes into his labyrinthine creations with thepromise of treasure and a good fight — only to be trapped by his ingeniousdevices. Once they are in his grasp, our Dungeon Lord must look after andcherish his new found prisoners until they are more comfortable with theirsurroundings because come the “harvest”, happy heroes have more precioussoul energy for you to gleefully extract via foul prisons or twistedtorture chambers!

Game Play

I for one normally like point and click strategy games. I loved the basic idea here of build your dungeon up and then work on taking the heroes out. In theory this game was amazing from the get go. When I had the opportunity to review it, I jumped at it. Then I got the game and started playing. It loads up and I start the tutorial. I feel pretty confident until I get to the first “fight.” Then the game just fell flat. There was something missing in this game. It felt as if all the money had been spent on visual and voice acting and the rest was kind of just there.

Your objective isn’t to just kill the heroes. You want to make them worth killing before you actually kill them. So you set objects around for them to gain experience then you kill them for their soul energy. It is a fun concept but that is about all it is, a concept. After a while, it becomes more a pesky annoyance than any real fun. You have to find what the hero is interested in and place it there for them to be interested so that they gain soul energy so you can make it worthwhile to kill them.

One of my biggest issues with the game is the lack of control over my monsters. Normally what would happen is a hero would come in, I would have a decently leveled monster in the room, and nothing. The monster would let the hero walk right by. So, after a few times of this happening, I just took the Dungeon lord, Deimos, and let him take out the Heroes. It really started to get old quick. I am sure down the road they may fix this issue with a patch but the fact of the matter was that it was just boring to run in, let a very boring combat take place, and get through the mission.

There are a wide range of missions though so if you do pick this game up and find it fun, it will last you a good while. Missions range from using different dungeon lords with different abilities and tasks to digging up gold or capturing dungeons. You will have your hands full with this game as you play through. Be warned though, in most of the missions it becomes quite annoying when you are overrun by too many heroes and your monsters aren’t helping. Multiplayer was not much more inspiring by any means. I felt very much the same and honestly thought that the overall game play was very uninspiring.

Visuals

This is one of the shining points in this game. The dungeons looked amazing, cut scenes were great. If you want to talk about video games as art, this is a perfect example. You could really tell that the developers took their time on this aspect of the game and wanted to show they could create a great visual experience. Let me take it a few steps further so that you understand where I am coming from with this. The overall feel of the game makes you feel as if you are in a dungeon. The developers of the dungeons give you this dirty feeling that really does help keep in involved in the game.

Sound

Next to visuals this was my favorite part of the game. The story really is comedic. The Dungeon Lord and his girlfriend get into a little fight. She steals his throne and that is where the story takes off. Now, I could relate, most guys could. Get into a fight with your significant other, have to find a way to win them back or at least get back what is yours. This sets up for some great humor and an enjoyable group of voice actors. There really is no negative to the sound here.

Replay Value

If you enjoy this game, the value is there for you. The online game play, while I had similar issues, was fun. I would say that if they fix the issue with enemy detection for the monsters, this game could be a solid game to play. I would not recommend this game if you don’t like strategy games, get bored easily, or need a sense of motivation to play a game. This is more of a take it one level at a time type game because chances are you are going to be annoyed after each level.

Pros
-Visuals are amazing
-Voice acting done very well, a lot of humor.

Cons
-Very Repetitive
-Lacking a “wow” factor
-Game play is very uninspired feeling

Overall

This game is very average. Visuals and Sound are great, game play is lacking. You couldn’t ask for a more average game. Hopefully after a few patches, this game turns it around because I really don’t want to give up on it yet. There are some things you can’t fix like repetition and missing that feeling of playing a great game but they can fix the detection system as well as maybe add some more items to the game.
